Getting used to it

The dogs were really bothered by the new path (they preferred the boring, straight route) but they're slowly coming around.

  1. Your dogs are gorgeous!! *Beautiful* babies. And the garden's coming along beautifully, too!

  2. Thanks! Yes, the dogs are real sweeties.

As for the garden, just to the left of the black and white dog (dog's right) is the latest addition, Heavenly Bamboo. I've been reading a bit about it and am looking forward to seeing the various colours throughout the year (that is, if I don't accidentally kill it).

  3. I like the new path! Looks great.

As newbie gardeners ourselves, we've found the best thing is to just start doing. You'll find some things will grow with little effort, and other plants will die. Once you know what your pain points are it's a lot easier to focus your research on just those issues. And some things are just timing: last year our zucchinis didn't produce a single squash (we planted too late). This year we planted three and we've got far more than we can eat!

  4. That theory works for vegetables, I find. This year it looks like we'll have corn and peppers, but no artichoke. The cabbage hasn't let us know its plans yet. Last year I had gigantic winter squash, but of a not-so-tasty variety. Still have a foot-and-a-half-long one sitting on the porch!

I get nervous spending lots of money on shrubs and trees only to have them die, though. This year I visit stores, take notes and photos, then go home and research--garden journalism :-)
